WHERE TO START

What Is An East African Safari?

A safari is simply a guided journey into wildlife country. In Kenya and Tanzania that means open plains, big skies and animals living exactly as they always have, watched from a vehicle with a guide who knows where to look.

Most trips run three to ten days and combine two or three parks. You sleep in tented camps or lodges, drive out early when animals are active, rest through the middle of the day and head out again in the late afternoon light.

African Safari Package Types

Every safari we run covers the same parks and the same wildlife. What changes between these four bands is where you sleep, how many people share your vehicle and how much of the day you spend driving.

Budget Camping

$150 to $220
per person per day

Shared vehicle with a pop-up roof, simple public campsites just outside the park gates, all park fees included. The cheapest honest way to see the Mara.

Mid Range

$250 to $400
per person per day

Private four wheel drive, permanent tented camps or lodges inside or bordering the reserve, full board. This is where most of our bookings sit.

Luxury

$450 to $800
per person per day

Small camps in private conservancies, night drives and walking safaris, a dedicated guide and vehicle throughout, and far fewer other cars at a sighting.

Fly-In and Exclusive

$800+
per person per day

Light aircraft between parks instead of long road transfers, private villas or exclusive-use camps, and a bespoke itinerary with no fixed pattern.

WHAT IT COSTS

Safari Cost: What To Expect

Park fees alone run $80 to $200 per person per day in Kenya, so the biggest difference between price bands is where you sleep and how many people share your vehicle.

Mid range$250 to $400Private vehicle, comfortable tented camps, full board

BEFORE YOU BOOK

How To Choose A Safari Operator

Check the TRA licence

Every legitimate Kenyan operator holds a Tourism Regulatory Authority licence. Ask for the number and verify it.

No full payment upfront

A deposit of 30 percent is normal. Anyone demanding the full amount before you travel is a warning sign.

A named person to talk to

You should know who is planning your trip and be able to reach them directly, not through a chatbot.

Written inclusions

Park fees, meals, transfers and vehicle type should be in writing before you pay anything.

WHEN TO TRAVEL

Best Time to Go on an African Safari

There is no bad month to be on safari in East Africa, only different trade-offs between wildlife density, weather, crowds and price. Here is what each season actually buys you.

SeasonMonthsWhat it means for you
PeakJul to OctMigration in the Masai Mara, dry weather, the best game viewing of the year. Book six months ahead and expect top rates.
HighDec to MarCalving season, strong predator activity, clear skies. Quieter than peak and often better value.
ShoulderNov and early DecShort rains ending, fresh green landscapes, thin crowds and softer prices.
GreenApr to JunLong rains. Lush, empty parks and the lowest rates of the year, in exchange for muddy tracks and some closures.
WHY SOLA SAFARIS

Why Choose Sola Safari Travels

We are a Kenyan operator, licensed by the Tourism Regulatory Authority, running private and group safari vehicles with our own employed guides, rather than subcontracting your trip to whoever is cheapest that week.

Licensed and Bonded

TRA licensed and listed on SafariBookings and Tripadvisor. You can check every one of those before you pay us anything.

Our Own Guides

Our driver guides are salaried staff, not freelancers assigned on the morning. They know the resident prides and where the herds moved yesterday.

No Full Payment Upfront

Thirty per cent secures your dates. The balance is due thirty days before you travel, never before.

Written Inclusions

Your itinerary states exactly what is and is not included, in writing, before you pay. No surprise park fees at the gate.

A Named Person

You deal with one consultant from first enquiry to the airport transfer home, reachable on WhatsApp while you travel.

Community and Conservation

We use community owned conservancies where we can, which keeps land under wildlife and puts your money into the villages beside the parks.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Safari Questions, Answered

Three to six months for the July to October peak, when the best camps fill early. Green season trips in April to June can often be arranged with a month’s notice. Gorilla permits in Uganda and Rwanda need around six months.

Yes. Kenya’s parks are well established and our guides are trained in safety and first aid. Vehicles are licensed and inspected, drivers stay in radio contact on every game drive, and we only use vetted accommodation partners.

Park and reserve fees, a professional guide, 4×4 vehicle, accommodation and most meals, drinking water and airport transfers. International flights, visas, insurance, drinks and tips are extra.

Yes, and it is one of our most requested routes. We handle the border crossing at Isebania or the Namanga gate, and arrange the vehicle change on the Tanzanian side. See our Kenya and Tanzania safaris.

Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early mornings, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a camera. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies, and use soft bags rather than hard suitcases if you are flying between parks. Our packing guide has a full list.
