GENERAL OVERVIEW
About Rwenzori Mountains National Park
The Rwenzoris are the Mountains of the Moon, the range Ptolemy placed at the source of the Nile in the second century. The Ugandan national park covers 996 square kilometres of the eastern slopes along the Congo border and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
Unlike Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, these are not volcanoes. The Rwenzoris are a block of ancient rock thrust upward by the Albertine Rift, which is why the range is a wall rather than a cone. Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley reaches 5,109 metres, the third highest point in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.
They are also glaciated, on the equator. The ice is retreating fast, having lost the great majority of its extent over the last century, and current projections suggest the remaining glaciers may disappear within the next decade or two.
The other distinction is the vegetation. The afro-alpine zone here produces giant groundsels and lobelias at a scale found nowhere else, growing out of permanent bog under near constant cloud. Travellers consistently describe it as the strangest landscape they have walked through.
TREKKING ROUTES
How People Climb Here
The Central Circuit. Seven to nine days from Nyakalengija, run by Rwenzori Mountaineering Services. A loop through Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku and Kitandara huts, with the option to summit Margherita from Elena Hut. The classic route and the wettest.
The Kilembe Trail. Seven to nine days from Kilembe near Kasese, operated by Rwenzori Trekking Services. Longer, drier underfoot and generally considered the more scenic approach, with better hut standards.
Short treks. Three or four day options on both routes reach the Nyabitaba or Sine hut area and the lower bamboo and heather zones. These require no technical skill and give a real sense of the range without the summit commitment.
Margherita summit. Requires crampons, harness, rope and a guide certified for glacier travel. The final section crosses the Stanley Plateau ice and is a genuine mountaineering day, not a walk.
WILDLIFE AND LANDSCAPES
What You Will See On The Way Up
Vegetation zones. The reason people come. Montane forest to about 2,500 metres, then bamboo, then heather and giant tree groundsels, then afro-alpine moorland with giant lobelias, then rock, snow and ice. Each zone looks like a different planet.
Mammals. Rwenzori duiker and Rwenzori otter shrew, both endemic. Blue monkey, black and white colobus, chimpanzee, forest elephant, bushbuck, giant forest hog and the hyrax colonies whose calls carry through the night at the huts.
Birds. Around 217 species with nineteen Albertine Rift endemics. Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori batis, handsome francolin, strange weaver, Archer’s robin-chat and the bearded vulture at altitude.
Terrain and bog. Much of the mid altitude route crosses permanent bog on tussocks. It is slow, wet and awkward walking, and it is the part that defines the Rwenzoris more than the ice does.
WHY VISIT
What The Rwenzoris Are Known For
Glaciers on the equator, and not for much longer. The Rwenzori ice is disappearing within a human lifetime and travellers who want to see it are working against a closing window.
The vegetation is the second reason, and for many people the stronger one. The giant lobelias and groundsels of the afro-alpine zone are found only in East Africa’s highest ranges and nowhere at this density. Walking through them in cloud is genuinely otherworldly.
And there is the solitude. Kilimanjaro takes tens of thousands of climbers a year. The Rwenzoris take a few thousand. You will pass almost no one.
This is not a safari destination. There are no game drives and no lodges in the mountains. It is a trekking park, and it deserves to be treated as its own trip rather than an addition to one.
ENTRY FEES
Park Fees And Trek Costs
Park entry for foreign non-residents is 35 US dollars per person per day, set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. In practice nobody pays this separately, because trekking here is sold as an all inclusive package.
A full seven to nine day Central Circuit or Kilembe trek runs from roughly 1,200 to 1,800 US dollars per person depending on operator, group size and whether you attempt the summit. That covers park fees, guides, porters, hut accommodation, meals and, for Margherita, technical equipment and a certified summit guide.
Short three to four day treks run from around 500 to 800 dollars per person on the same all inclusive basis.
Both operators are long established and work with local porter communities. We book directly with them and the figure appears in your quote as a single line rather than a stack of separate fees.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
When To Trek
June to August and December to February, the drier seasons. The only sensible windows for a summit attempt. Rock and ice conditions are more stable and the bog, while never dry, is passable.
March to May and September to November, the rains. Very wet. The bog becomes exhausting and cloud sits on the range for days. Short treks are still possible, summit attempts are not advisable.
An honest caveat: the Rwenzoris are among the wettest mountains in Africa and rain is possible on any day of any month. The difference between the seasons is degree rather than kind, and every trekker should expect to be wet.
GETTING THERE
How To Reach The Park
By road from Entebbe or Kampala. Around 375 km to Kasese, six to seven hours on tarmac via Fort Portal or Mbarara.
To the trailheads. Nyakalengija for the Central Circuit is about 25 km from Kasese, roughly forty five minutes. Kilembe is 12 km from Kasese, around twenty five minutes.
From Queen Elizabeth. About an hour from the northern sector to Kasese, which is why the two are often paired.
From Kibale. An hour and a half via Fort Portal.
By air. Scheduled flights from Entebbe to Kasese take about an hour.
Treks start the morning after arrival, so plan a night in Kasese or at the trailhead before day one.
WHERE TO STAY
Before, During And After
On the mountain. Huts only. The Central Circuit uses Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Kitandara and Elena. The Kilembe route uses Sine, Kalalama, Mutinda, Bugata, Hunwick’s and Margherita camps, which are generally the better maintained of the two systems. All are basic: bunks, a communal area and a long drop.
At the trailhead. Ruboni Community Camp near Nyakalengija, run by the local community, and Trekkers Hostel at Kilembe.
In Kasese. Rwenzori International Hotel and a range of guesthouses for the night before and the night after.
Nearby. Kyaninga Lodge and the crater lake properties near Fort Portal, an hour and a half away, are where most people go to recover afterwards.
SAFETY AND TRAVEL TIPS
What To Know Before You Go
This is a serious mountain. Margherita is a technical glacier ascent requiring crampons, harness and rope. It is not a walk-up peak and should not be attempted without the certified summit guide the operators provide.
Altitude. Above 4,000 metres altitude sickness is a real risk. The itineraries build in acclimatisation and it should not be shortened.
Wet. Expect to be wet for most of the trek. Waterproof shell, gaiters, gum boots for the bog sections, which the operators can supply, and everything inside dry bags.
Cold. Sub zero at the high camps. A four season sleeping bag, down layer, hat and gloves.
Fitness. Consecutive days of six to eight hours on tussock bog and steep ground. Train for endurance rather than speed.
Porters. Included in package rates and carry the group gear. Tipping at the end is customary and expected.
Health. Malaria prophylaxis for the lowland approach and a yellow fever certificate for entry to Uganda.
TOURS WITH US
Safaris With Sola Safari Travels
We book Rwenzori treks directly with the two established operators, Rwenzori Mountaineering Services on the Central Circuit and Rwenzori Trekking Services on the Kilembe route, and handle everything on either side of the mountain: flights or transfers from Entebbe, the nights in Kasese, kit hire and the recovery days afterwards.
For most travellers the honest recommendation is a three or four day short trek rather than the full circuit. It reaches the heather and giant groundsel zone, needs no technical skill and combines with Queen Elizabeth and Kibale into a normal Uganda itinerary. The full summit is a trip of its own and we plan it that way.

KEY QUESTIONS
Rwenzori Safari, Key Questions
Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley reaches 5,109 metres, making it the third highest point in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike those two the Rwenzoris are not volcanic but a block of ancient rock lifted by the Albertine Rift.
Yes, though not for much longer. The Rwenzori glaciers have lost the great majority of their extent over the last century and current projections suggest the remaining ice may be gone within the next decade or two.
The full Central Circuit or Kilembe trek is seven to nine days of six to eight hour days, much of it across permanent bog, in near constant rain. The Margherita summit is a technical glacier ascent needing crampons, harness and rope. Short three to four day treks reach the heather zone and need no technical skill.
Roughly 1,200 to 1,800 US dollars per person for a full seven to nine day trek, all inclusive of park fees, guides, porters, huts, meals and summit equipment. Short three to four day treks run from about 500 to 800 dollars. Park entry alone is 35 dollars per day but is never paid separately.
The Kilembe Trail is generally drier underfoot, has better maintained camps and is considered more scenic. The Central Circuit is the classic route and the shorter of the two. Both reach Margherita.
A short three or four day trek combines easily with Queen Elizabeth and Kibale, which are one to two hours away. A full summit attempt is a trip in its own right and we plan it separately rather than bolting it onto a game viewing itinerary.
