Quick answer: Diani Beach is on the Kenyan south coast in Kwale County, about 30 km south of Mombasa and roughly an hour away including the Likoni ferry. It is 17 km of white sand protected by an offshore coral reef, reached most easily by a one hour flight from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip.
OVERVIEW AND LOCATION
Diani Beach At A Glance
Diani sits on the Kenyan south coast in Kwale County, about 30 km south of Mombasa. It is roughly 17 km of continuous white sand backed by coastal forest, with a fringing coral reef about a kilometre offshore that keeps the lagoon flat, shallow and safe to swim in. The sand here is genuinely white rather than the yellow you find further north, because it is ground coral rather than river sediment.
Why it exists on most itineraries. Diani is the decompression stop. After a week of five in the morning starts and long days in a vehicle, three or four nights on the coast is how people actually absorb a safari. It is not a place you build a trip around so much as the place you end one.
Terrain and setting. Beach, lagoon and reef in front, and behind it a strip of coastal forest that is the last significant habitat for the endangered Angolan colobus monkey. Inland, the Shimba Hills rise within a 45 minute drive, which is where the sable antelope and forest elephant are.

GETTING THERE
How To Get To Diani Beach
By air, and this is the one to take. Daily scheduled flights run from Nairobi Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta to Ukunda airstrip, which is ten minutes from most Diani hotels. In season there are also direct flights from the Masai Mara and Amboseli airstrips, which is by far the easiest way to join safari and beach without backtracking through Nairobi.
By road from Mombasa. About an hour, including the Likoni ferry crossing. The ferry queues badly at peak times, so we build a buffer into transfer timings rather than cutting it fine against a flight.
| Route | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi to Ukunda by air | 1 hour | Several daily departures. The sensible choice, and no ferry involved |
| Masai Mara to Ukunda | 2 hours flying | Seasonal direct services, otherwise via Nairobi. Booked as one ticket |
| Mombasa to Diani by road | 1 hour | Via the Likoni ferry. Allow extra time on Friday and Sunday evenings |
| Nairobi to Diani by road | 8 to 9 hours | Long, and only worth it if you want to break the journey in Tsavo |
| By train | 6 hours to Mombasa | The SGR from Nairobi, then an hour by road. Comfortable and good value |
Good to know about the ferry. The Likoni ferry is free for foot passengers and carries vehicles for a small fee. It runs continuously but can back up for 30 to 40 minutes at rush hour. If your flight home is out of Mombasa rather than Ukunda, we build that delay into the plan.
ENTRY FEES
Diani Fees and What You Pay For
Diani itself is a public beach with no entry fee. The costs here are for the marine parks and reserves you visit from it, all of which are managed by Kenya Wildlife Service and charged per person per day.
| Where | Non-resident adult | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park | USD 20 per day | The reef an hour south. Usually bundled into a dhow trip price |
| Mombasa Marine Park | USD 17 per day | Closer, shallower, good for a first snorkel |
| Shimba Hills National Reserve | USD 25 per day | 45 minutes inland. Sable antelope and forest elephant |
| Colobus Conservation | Donation based | The colobus monkey project in Diani village. Guided walks by arrangement |
Paying. KWS marine parks are cashless like the inland parks, so payment is by card or eCitizen. On our itineraries these fees are included and handled for you. Dhow operators normally quote an all-in price that already covers the marine park fee, so check whether it does before paying twice.
SAFARI COSTS
What Time on Diani Costs
Diani is generally cheaper per night than a safari camp because there are no park fees, no vehicle and no guide in the daily rate. The range is wide, from simple beach guesthouses to some of the best hotels on the Indian Ocean.
| Style | Per person per day | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | USD 60 to 110 | Guesthouses and small hotels set back from the beach, bed and breakfast |
| Mid range | USD 130 to 250 | Beachfront hotels with pools, half board, most water sports available on site |
| Luxury | USD 300 to 600 | Boutique beachfront properties or private villas with staff, all inclusive options |
| Villa and exclusive | USD 700 and above | Whole-villa rental with cook and housekeeper, best value for families and groups |
What moves the price most. Beachfront or not. A hotel directly on the sand costs noticeably more than one across the road, and in Diani that walk matters less than you would think because the beach is public along its whole length.
Green season savings. April and May are the long rains and hotels discount heavily, often 40 to 50 per cent. It is humid and there will be rain, but usually in short heavy bursts rather than all day. October and November are the short rains and offer the best balance of price and weather.
Add-on costs to budget for. A Kisite dhow day trip runs around USD 90 to USD 130 per person including lunch and park fees. Diving is roughly USD 60 to USD 90 per dive. Kitesurfing lessons start around USD 60 an hour.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
When To Go To Diani Beach
Diani is warm all year and the sea never drops below about 26 degrees. What changes between months is the wind, the rain and the visibility underwater, not the temperature.
| Season | Months | What to expect | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | Dec to Mar | Hot, dry and calm. The best swimming and the clearest diving visibility of the year | High |
| Windy / High | Jun to Sep | Cooler and breezy. Prime kitesurfing season and humpback whales passing offshore | Medium |
| Shoulder | Oct to Nov | Short rains, warm, quiet and good value. Usually brief downpours rather than all-day rain | Low |
| Green | Apr to May | Long rains, humid, heaviest discounting. Some smaller places close for the month | Low |
For diving and snorkelling come between December and March, when the water is calmest and visibility is at its best. Kisite is worth the day trip in any month, but in the windy season the crossing can be rough.
For kitesurfing June to September is the season, when the south east trade winds blow steadily across the lagoon. Diani is one of the better learning spots in Africa because the reef keeps the water flat.
Worth knowing about seaweed. Between roughly April and July, seaweed washes onto parts of the beach. It is natural and seasonal, hotels clear their own frontage daily, and it does not affect swimming inside the lagoon. Anyone who tells you it never happens has not been in May.
WILDLIFE AND ACTIVITIES
What You Will See and Do at Diani
Diani is not only a beach. The wildlife here is coastal and forest rather than savanna, and several of the species are found nowhere else in Kenya.
Marine life and wildlife.
- Angolan colobus monkeys in the coastal forest, with rope bridges over the main road to keep troops connected
- Bottlenose and humpback dolphins resident around Kisite year round
- Humpback whales passing offshore between July and September
- Green and hawksbill turtles nesting on the quieter stretches
- Reef life including moray eels, octopus, lionfish and over 250 recorded fish species
- Sable antelope and forest elephant in the Shimba Hills, 45 minutes inland
Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park. An hour south by road then out by dhow. The best snorkelling on the Kenyan coast, with dolphin sightings common on the way out and a seafood lunch on Wasini Island. A full day and the single most booked excursion here.
Diving. The reef wall has sites suitable from a first open water dive upward. December to March gives the best visibility. Several PADI centres operate along the beach.
Kitesurfing and water sports. Kitesurfing from June to September, plus paddleboarding, windsurfing and jet skis inside the lagoon all year.
Deep sea fishing. Sailfish, marlin and tuna beyond the reef, strongest between November and March. Catch and release is standard with the reputable operators.
Shimba Hills National Reserve. A 45 minute drive inland for sable antelope, forest elephant and Sheldrick Falls. A good half day if you want one more dose of wildlife before flying home.
Wasini Island and Shimoni. Dhow sailing, a seafood lunch and the Shimoni slave caves. Usually combined with the Kisite trip as one full day.
WHERE TO STAY
Where To Stay on Diani Beach
Diani runs north to south and the character changes along it. The northern end is busier and better for restaurants and nightlife, the southern end quieter and better for families and couples.
Northern Diani
Closest to the restaurants, bars and dive centres. Busiest stretch of beach and the easiest if you want to walk out to dinner.
Central Diani
The main hotel strip, with the widest choice of mid range beachfront properties and most water sports operators on site.
Southern Diani and Galu
Quieter, wider beach and fewer people. Best for families and anyone who wants to read a book without a jet ski going past.
Private Villas
Whole-villa rental with a cook and housekeeper. Usually the best value for a family or group of six or more, and often beachfront.
Chale Island
A small private island a short boat hop south. Exclusive and secluded, good for honeymoons.
Msambweni and Further South
Forty minutes beyond Diani. Very quiet, high end, and worth it if total seclusion is the point.

KEY QUESTIONS
Diani Beach, Key Questions
Three or four. Two is enough to unwind but not enough to fit a Kisite dhow trip and still have beach days. More than five and most people start looking for something to do, unless you are diving every day.
Seasonally, yes. Between roughly April and July seaweed washes up on parts of the beach. It is natural, hotels rake their own frontage every morning, and it does not affect swimming inside the lagoon. December to March is essentially clear.
Not equally. At low tide the lagoon becomes very shallow and you can walk a long way out, which is excellent for children and poor for swimming. High tide is when the lagoon is best for a proper swim. Tide tables change daily and your hotel will have them at reception.
Safari first, almost always. Game drives mean early starts and long days in a vehicle, and doing that after a week of lying down is harder than the other way round. Ending on the coast also means you fly home rested.
Yes. It is a well established resort area with a visible tourist police presence. Take the ordinary precautions of any beach destination: do not leave valuables on the sand, use hotel safes, and take a taxi rather than walk the beach road late at night.
More than most people expect. Kisite marine park for snorkelling, diving on the reef wall, kitesurfing from June to September, deep sea fishing, the Colobus Conservation project in the village, Shimba Hills reserve inland for sable antelope, and Wasini Island for dhow sailing and a seafood lunch.
