Quick answer: Meru National Park covers about 870 square kilometres of bush, rivers and grassland east of Mount Kenya, around 350 km from Nairobi. It is 5 to 6 hours by road or about 1 hour 15 minutes by air. It is the park of Born Free, has a fenced rhino sanctuary, lion, elephant and dry-country species, and sees a fraction of the visitors of the southern parks.
OVERVIEW AND LOCATION
Meru National Park At A Glance
Meru National Park lies on the eastern slopes below the Nyambene Hills, where the land drops from green highlands into hot, open bush. Thirteen rivers and many smaller streams cross the park on their way to the Tana, lined with doum palms and riverine forest, so the park is greener and more varied than its neighbours to the north.
History. This is where George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness, the story told in Born Free. Poaching hit Meru hard in the 1980s, but Kenya Wildlife Service rebuilt it, and today it has a protected rhino sanctuary and healthy lion and elephant populations. Joy Adamson’s camp site and Elsa’s grave can still be visited.
The wider area. Meru is the heart of the Meru Conservation Area, together with Kora National Park and the Bisanadi, Mwingi and Rahole reserves, one of the largest protected wildernesses in Kenya.

GETTING THERE
How To Get To Meru
Step one: fly into Nairobi. International arrivals land at Jomo Kenyatta International. Light aircraft to Meru leave from Wilson Airport.
Step two: Nairobi to Meru.
| Option | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| By road | 5 to 6 hours | About 350 km on tarmac via Nanyuki, Meru town and Maua to Murera Gate |
| By air | About 1 hour 15 minutes | Scheduled and charter flights from Wilson to the park airstrip, then a short transfer |
| From Ol Pejeta | About 3 hours | Around the northern side of Mount Kenya |
| From Samburu | About 3 hours | Via Isiolo; easy to combine on a northern circuit |
Worth knowing. Inside the park the roads are rough in places, so we always use a 4×4 with a guide who knows Meru. It is not a park for self-driving in a saloon car.

SAFARI COSTS
What A Meru Safari Costs
Meru is good value. Park fees are lower than the premium parks and there are only a few lodges, from simple KWS bandas to one of Kenya’s best-known luxury lodges.
| Style | Per person per day | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | USD 150 to 220 | KWS bandas or simple camps, shared vehicle, fees included |
| Mid range | USD 250 to 380 | Riverside tented camp, private 4×4, full board |
| Luxury | USD 500 to 850 | Hilltop lodge with pool, guided activities, all meals |
| Fly-in | USD 600 and above | Flights from Nairobi, no long road transfers |
What moves the price most. Whether you drive or fly. The drive is long, so on a short trip flying in saves a full day.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
When To Go To Meru
Meru is hot and lower than the highlands. The rains turn it lush, but also make some tracks hard to use.
| Season | Months | What to expect | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | Jun to Oct | Dry, animals close to the rivers, easiest driving | Low |
| Dry / High | Jan to Feb | Hot and dry, good viewing and clear light | Low |
| Shoulder | Nov to Dec | Short rains, green bush, migrant birds | Very low |
| Green | Mar to May | Long rains; some areas closed, lowest rates | Very low |
Meru is never busy. Even in August you may see only a handful of other vehicles in a day, which is its biggest draw.

KEY QUESTIONS
Meru Safari, Key Questions
Two nights at least, and three if you drive from Nairobi, which takes five to six hours. The park is large and the tracks are slow, and the best areas, the Tana River and the rhino sanctuary, sit far apart, so an extra day lets you reach them without rushing. A short flight to the park airstrip saves most of a day.
Yes, if you value space and scenery over a checklist. You will see far fewer vehicles than in the Masai Mara or Amboseli, and the doum palms, rivers and green hills make it one of Kenya’s most beautiful parks. Elephant, lion, cheetah, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra all live here, though sightings take more patience.
Yes. Black and white rhino live in a fenced sanctuary inside the park, which you drive through with your guide. White rhino are seen often, while black rhino are shyer and take more time in the thicker bush.
George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness into Meru in the late 1950s, the story told in the book and film Born Free. You can visit their camp site and Elsa’s grave.
Budget from about USD 150 to 220 per person per day, mid range USD 250 to 380 and luxury from USD 500. The KWS park fee is USD 80 per adult per 24 hours, paid in advance through eCitizen and included in our quotes. See our guide to Kenya safari costs.
Yes, it is the natural pairing. They are about three hours apart via Isiolo, and together with Ol Pejeta they make a complete northern Kenya safari.
