Quick answer: Meru National Park covers about 870 square kilometres of bush, rivers and grassland east of Mount Kenya, around 350 km from Nairobi. It is 5 to 6 hours by road or about 1 hour 15 minutes by air. It is the park of Born Free, has a fenced rhino sanctuary, lion, elephant and dry-country species, and sees a fraction of the visitors of the southern parks.

OVERVIEW AND LOCATION

Meru National Park At A Glance

Meru National Park lies on the eastern slopes below the Nyambene Hills, where the land drops from green highlands into hot, open bush. Thirteen rivers and many smaller streams cross the park on their way to the Tana, lined with doum palms and riverine forest, so the park is greener and more varied than its neighbours to the north.

History. This is where George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness, the story told in Born Free. Poaching hit Meru hard in the 1980s, but Kenya Wildlife Service rebuilt it, and today it has a protected rhino sanctuary and healthy lion and elephant populations. Joy Adamson’s camp site and Elsa’s grave can still be visited.

The wider area. Meru is the heart of the Meru Conservation Area, together with Kora National Park and the Bisanadi, Mwingi and Rahole reserves, one of the largest protected wildernesses in Kenya.

KEY QUESTIONS

Meru Safari, Key Questions

Two nights at least, and three if you drive from Nairobi, which takes five to six hours. The park is large and the tracks are slow, and the best areas, the Tana River and the rhino sanctuary, sit far apart, so an extra day lets you reach them without rushing. A short flight to the park airstrip saves most of a day.

Yes, if you value space and scenery over a checklist. You will see far fewer vehicles than in the Masai Mara or Amboseli, and the doum palms, rivers and green hills make it one of Kenya’s most beautiful parks. Elephant, lion, cheetah, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra all live here, though sightings take more patience.

Yes. Black and white rhino live in a fenced sanctuary inside the park, which you drive through with your guide. White rhino are seen often, while black rhino are shyer and take more time in the thicker bush.

George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness into Meru in the late 1950s, the story told in the book and film Born Free. You can visit their camp site and Elsa’s grave.

Budget from about USD 150 to 220 per person per day, mid range USD 250 to 380 and luxury from USD 500. The KWS park fee is USD 80 per adult per 24 hours, paid in advance through eCitizen and included in our quotes. See our guide to Kenya safari costs.

Yes, it is the natural pairing. They are about three hours apart via Isiolo, and together with Ol Pejeta they make a complete northern Kenya safari.
