Africa’s most complete safari country. Endless plains, a collapsed volcano full of wildlife and an island to finish on.
Tanzania sets aside more of its land for wildlife than almost any country on earth. Close to a third of it is protected, and that scale shows the moment you reach the Serengeti, where the plains run past the horizon in every direction.
Because the migration spends most of the year inside Tanzania, there is somewhere worth being in almost any month. Add Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar and you can build a trip that never repeats itself.
Around a third of Tanzania is protected land. Parks are enormous and sightings feel genuinely wild.
The herds spend roughly nine months of the year inside the Serengeti ecosystem.
A collapsed volcano holding a resident population of around 25,000 animals, including black rhino.
An hour’s flight from the parks to white sand, spice farms and Stone Town.
Endless plains, migration, big cats
Where the Great Migration spends most of the year, with superb predator viewing.
Dense wildlife, black rhino, crater floor
A collapsed volcano with its own resident wildlife, including black rhino.
Africa’s highest peak, five to nine day treks
Trek to the roof of Africa: no ropes needed, just time and altitude.
Baobabs and the largest elephant herds
Huge elephant herds and ancient baobabs along the Tarangire River.
Tree climbing lions and soda lake birdlife
A compact park below the Rift escarpment, with forest, lake and birdlife.
Stone Town, spice farms, white sand
White beaches and the old Swahili town, the perfect finish to a safari.
It is not one event but a continuous loop. Around two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle follow the rains clockwise through the Serengeti and into the Masai Mara, then back again.
Calving happens in the southern Serengeti between January and March, when roughly half a million calves are born within a few weeks. The river crossings people picture happen from July to October in the north.
Where the herds are
Jan to Mar
Southern Serengeti and Ndutu, calving season
Apr to Jun
Moving north through the central and western corridor
Jul to Oct
Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara, river crossings
Nov to Dec
Returning south with the short rains
Tanzanian park fees are higher than Kenya’s, which is the main reason daily rates sit a little above the Kenyan equivalent.

June to October is the classic dry season with the easiest game viewing. January to March is calving season in the south and excellent for predators. April and May are wet, quiet and considerably cheaper.
Yes. Most nationalities can apply online at visa.immigration.go.tz for around 50 US dollars, allowing five to ten working days. Visas on arrival are available at major airports but the queues can be long. See our visa page. From 1 October 2026 Tanzania also requires its own inbound travel insurance, 44 US dollars per adult and 22 per child, bought online before you travel. Your own travel insurance does not replace it.
Very easily. Flights from Arusha or the Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar take about an hour, and three or four nights on the island is the usual way to finish a safari.
Yes. The northern circuit of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara packs a great deal into a week, with little backtracking between parks. The Ngorongoro Crater alone gives a strong chance of four of the Big Five in a single morning. See our Serengeti guide.
Send us your dates and we will suggest a northern circuit route with honest advice on where the herds are likely to be.
