One migration, two countries. Combine the Masai Mara with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a single route, arranged end to end by one operator.

LAND BORDER
FROM PER PERSON
The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are the same grassland with a border drawn through it. The wildebeest do not stop at that border, so a safari that only visits one side sees half the story. Between roughly July and October the herds are in the Mara. From December to March they are calving on the southern Serengeti plains. A combined trip lets you follow them rather than hope they are where you booked.
Tanzania also holds the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed caldera with a resident population that does not migrate at all, which means reliable Big Five viewing in a single morning whatever the season is doing elsewhere.
Follow the herds across the border instead of booking one park and hoping the timing holds.
Rolling Mara grassland, the endless Serengeti, and the crater floor, all inside one trip.
Ngorongoro and Amboseli deliver species and scenery the Mara alone will not give you.
Finish on Zanzibar or Diani without a long repositioning flight home.
A single point of contact, one set of paperwork, and border logistics handled for you.
Every itinerary below crosses between both countries. All are private departures, so dates and pace are set around you rather than a fixed group schedule.

| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Road border | Isebania, or Namanga on the Amboseli route. Around one hour to clear with paperwork prepared in advance |
| By air | Nairobi to Kilimanjaro takes about one hour, or fly Mara airstrip direct to the Serengeti in season |
| Visas | Separate visas for each country. Kenya uses an electronic travel authorisation, Tanzania an e-visa. Apply before you fly. Tanzania also requires its own inbound travel insurance from 1 October 2026, 44 US dollars per adult, bought online |
| Vehicles | Vehicles do not cross. You change to a Tanzanian vehicle and guide at the border, which we arrange to meet you |
| Minimum length | Seven days. Anything shorter spends more time in transit than on game drives |
| Beach extension | Zanzibar from Kilimanjaro or Arusha, or Diani from Nairobi. Add three to four nights |
The migration is a continuous loop rather than an event with a date. Where you should be depends entirely on which month you can travel.
| Months | Where the herds are | Best base |
|---|---|---|
| Jan to Mar | Calving on the southern Serengeti plains. Predator activity at its highest of the year | Ndutu and southern Serengeti |
| Apr to May | Long rains. Herds move north and west, camps discount heavily, tracks are muddy | Central Serengeti |
| Jun | Herds gather at the Grumeti River in the western corridor | Western Serengeti |
| Jul to Aug | First Mara River crossings. Herds spread across the northern Serengeti and into the Mara | Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara |
| Sep to Oct | Peak Mara season. Crossings continue in both directions | Masai Mara |
| Nov to Dec | Short rains push the herds back south into Tanzania | Central and southern Serengeti |
If you have seven days or more, yes. The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem and the wildlife moves between them, so visiting both gives you a far better chance of good sightings whatever month you travel. Under seven days you will spend too much of the trip on transfers, and you are better off doing one country properly.
Most travellers cross by road at Isebania, between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti, which takes about an hour with paperwork prepared in advance. The alternative is a one hour flight from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro. Vehicles do not cross the border, so you change to a Tanzanian vehicle and guide on the other side. We arrange that handover so nobody is left waiting.
Seven days is the practical minimum and covers the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Ten days lets you add Amboseli or Lake Manyara and cuts the daily driving. Fourteen days allows a beach finish on Zanzibar or Diani without rushing the safari half.
Yes, and most people do. Zanzibar connects easily from Kilimanjaro or Arusha, and Diani from Nairobi. Three to four nights is the usual length. It works far better at the end of the trip than the beginning.
Yes. Kenya requires an electronic travel authorisation and Tanzania an e-visa, both applied for online before you fly. If your route also includes Uganda or Rwanda, the East Africa Tourist Visa may be cheaper. We will tell you which applies to your itinerary. Tanzania also requires its own inbound travel insurance from 1 October 2026, 44 US dollars per adult and 22 per child, bought online before you travel. Your own travel insurance does not replace it.
Tell us your dates, budget and whether you want the crossing by road or by air. We will build the route and send a clear price with no hidden costs.
