PLAN YOUR BUDGET // KENYA

Kenya Safari Cost Calculator 2026

Plan your Kenya safari budget in a few taps. Pick the season, your parks, who is travelling and how you like to travel, and we price every line in US dollars using the official 2026 park fees and competitive market rates for lodges, vehicles and flights.

Quick answer: In 2026 a Kenya safari costs roughly $100 to $250 per traveller per day on a budget, $250 to $600 mid-range and from $600 a day for luxury. Your travel month, parks, group size, lodging style and transport decide where you land. The calculator below builds an itemised estimate in about two minutes.

Your estimate refreshes with every tap. Pin one version as Trip A, try something different and compare both line by line. Treat the total as a strong guide for planning your budget rather than the final price, which we confirm in your free quote.

HOW IT WORKS

How We Calculate Your Estimate

We price your safari the same way our Nairobi team prices a real booking: one line at a time, from what each park charges at the gate and what camps, drivers and airlines actually ask.

Park And Reserve Fees

Charged per person for every 24 hours inside a park and set by the authority that runs it. In 2026 the Maasai Mara costs non-resident adults $100 a day from January to June and $200 from July to December. Amboseli and Lake Nakuru charge $90, Tsavo and Nairobi National Park $80, Meru $70 and Ol Pejeta $110. Teens and children pay less, and under 9s enter the Mara free.

Lodging And Season

Each tier starts from a 2026 rate per adult per night on full board. April and May run about 15% lower and July to October about 30% higher. Teens sharing with parents pay 75% of the adult rate and children 50%. Solo travellers pay a single room supplement, and residents and citizens get resident lodge rates, about 30% lower.

Transport

Private vans and Land Cruisers are priced per vehicle per day with a driver guide and fuel, so the cost per person falls as the group grows. Shared safaris are priced per seat.

Fly-in trips show two lines: bush flights, one seat per person for each hop including the flight back to Nairobi, and game drives and airstrip transfers, run by your lodge or our team on the ground. No road transport or vehicle gate fee is added, so nothing is billed twice, and conservancy camps include drives in their rate.

What Is Not Included

Drinks outside luxury camps, personal spending, vaccinations and any upgrade you have not ticked. Tips are optional but recommended, budgeted at $15 per adult per day. For a price you can book, request a free itemised quote or read our guide to how much a Kenya safari costs.

Sources: Kenya Wildlife Service conservation fees, October 2025, the Narok County Maasai Mara schedule for 2026, the Samburu County schedule and Ol Pejeta Conservancy rates for 2026. Ol Pejeta charges the adult rate from age 12. A legal challenge to the October 2025 KWS tariff is still before the High Court, so we use the rates KWS currently publishes and will update the calculator if they change.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

Smart Ways To Spend Less On A Kenya Safari

  • Travel between January and June. The Mara gate fee halves and many camps lower their rates, most of all in April and May.
  • Share the vehicle. A Land Cruiser costs the same for two guests or six, so a full vehicle cuts the transport cost per person to a third.
  • Travelling alone? Join a group departure. You pay for one seat instead of a whole vehicle and driver guide.
  • Visit fewer parks and stay longer. Each move between parks uses up a day on the road.
  • Mix road and air. Driving one way instead of flying saves about $400 per person on two flight legs.
  • Split your nights between the reserve and a conservancy. Two nights in each usually gives better value than four in a conservancy.
  • Use resident rates if you qualify. Citizens and permit holders pay shilling park fees and resident lodge rates. Carry your ID or permit to the gate.
BOOKING CHECKLIST

Checking A Safari Quote Before You Pay

  • Ask for park, conservancy and vehicle gate fees as separate lines at 2026 rates. Fees marked “payable locally” can make a quote look cheaper than it is.
  • Confirm the vehicle is private, how many window seats it has and whether the roof opens.
  • Check where each camp sits: inside the reserve, on its edge or in a private conservancy.
  • Ask what is excluded, such as drinks, tips, flights and activities.
  • Make sure the operator holds a Tourism Regulatory Authority licence, and read the deposit and cancellation terms before paying.

KEY QUESTIONS

Kenya Safari Costs, Key Questions

Park fees match the 2026 schedules from Narok County, the Kenya Wildlife Service, Samburu County and Ol Pejeta. Lodging, transport and activities use 2026 planning rates, so most trips land within about 10 to 15 percent of a real quote. Camps change their rates and fuel prices move, so treat the result as a strong guide rather than a booking price.

Yes. Park and reserve fees appear as their own line, worked out for every 24 hours you spend in each park and for each traveller by age and residency. Vehicle gate fees for private safaris are shown separately.

Narok County charges non-resident adults $100 a day from January to June and $200 a day from July to December, when the wildebeest migration is in the Mara. Many camps raise their rates at the same time, which is why the summary compares the same trip in April and in August.

Children aged 8 and under enter the Maasai Mara free, and teens aged 9 to 17 pay $50 a day. Kenya Wildlife Service parks charge children about half the adult rate and let under 5s in free. Ol Pejeta charges $55 for children aged 3 to 11. Children sharing with parents also pay less at most camps.

Yes. Kenyan and East African citizens and Kenya permit holders pay park fees in shillings, often a small fraction of the dollar rate, and most lodges offer resident rates. Choose your residency in step 3 and the calculator applies both.

For one or two people, yes. A private Land Cruiser costs the same whether two or six guests ride in it, so the cost per person falls as your group grows. Solo travellers usually save most by joining a shared group safari.

International flights are only added if you enter a fare. Drinks outside luxury camps, personal spending, vaccinations and optional upgrades are not included. Travel insurance is budgeted at about 5 percent of your trip cost when ticked.
