OVERVIEW AND LOCATION

Amboseli National Park At A Glance

Amboseli sits in Kajiado County in southern Kenya, pressed against the Tanzanian border directly beneath Kilimanjaro. At 392 square kilometres it is small by Kenyan standards, and that is precisely its strength. The whole park can be worked in a day, and the flat, open floor of a drained Pleistocene lake means an elephant herd is visible from a very long way off.

History. Amboseli was set aside as the Southern Reserve for the Maasai in 1906, became a national reserve in 1948 and was gazetted as a national park in 1974. It was declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1991. The elephants here are among the most studied in the world, following research begun by Cynthia Moss in 1972 that continues today.

Terrain. Five distinct habitats in a very compact area: the seasonal Lake Amboseli bed which floods only in heavy rain, the permanent Enkongo Narok and Ol Okenya swamps fed by Kilimanjaro meltwater, open plains, acacia woodland and lava rock thornbush. The swamps are why elephants stay here year round in a landscape that otherwise looks like dust.

ENTRY FEES

Amboseli Park Fees

Amboseli is a Kenya Wildlife Service park, so fees follow the KWS four tier tariff introduced on 1 October 2025. Amboseli sits in the premium tier. Rates are the same all year, which makes budgeting simpler here than in the Mara.

CategoryFeeNotes
Non-resident adultUSD 90Per 24 hours. Premium park tier from 1 October 2025
Non-resident child aged 3 to 17USD 50Under 3 enter free
Vehicle under 6 seatsKES 300Per day, charged separately
Kimana SanctuaryUSD 30Separate community conservancy. Night drives and walking permitted

Paying at the gate. KWS parks are fully cashless. Payment runs through KWSPay on eCitizen and no cash or card is taken at the gate itself, so this has to be arranged in advance. On every Sola Safari itinerary we handle it for you.

Rates shown follow the KWS tariff effective 1 October 2025. We confirm the current amount in writing with every quote.

SAFARI COSTS

What An Amboseli Safari Costs

Park fees here are USD 60 per person per day, lower than the Mara in peak season. Because the park is compact you also cover less ground, which keeps fuel and driving time down.

StylePer person per dayWhat you get
BudgetUSD 140 to 200Shared vehicle, simple camps around Kimana outside the park, all fees included
Mid rangeUSD 230 to 350Private four wheel drive, lodges inside the park with Kilimanjaro views, full board
LuxuryUSD 400 to 700Small camps in the surrounding conservancies, night drives and walking, dedicated guide and vehicle
Fly-inUSD 600 and aboveScheduled flights in and out, exclusive-use camps, no long road transfers

What moves the price most. Whether your lodge is inside the park or outside it. Inside costs more but puts you on the swamps at dawn, which is when the elephants come out and when Kilimanjaro is actually visible. Outside is cheaper and adds 45 minutes each way.

Green season savings. April, May and November bring rain and rates fall 30 to 40 per cent. Amboseli handles rain better than most Kenyan parks because the tracks are on old lake bed rather than black cotton soil, and a wet Amboseli is green rather than the dust bowl it becomes in the late dry season.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

When To Go To Amboseli

Amboseli is drier than the Mara and its wildlife concentrates around the permanent swamps year round, so game viewing is reliable in every month. What changes most here is whether you can actually see Kilimanjaro.

SeasonMonthsWhat to expectCrowds
PeakJun to OctDry, dusty and reliable. Animals crowd the swamps, Kilimanjaro is clearest at dawnHigh
Dry / HighJan to FebHot and dry, excellent elephant viewing and the clearest mountain views of the yearMedium
ShoulderNov to DecShort rains, green plains, migratory birds arriving, softer ratesLow to medium
GreenMar to MayLong rains. Lush, quiet and cheapest, but the mountain hides behind cloud for daysLow

For Kilimanjaro views the mountain is almost always cloud-covered by mid morning. Be out at first light or in the last hour before sunset, and come in the dry months. January and February give the highest odds of a clear summit.

For birdwatching come between November and April, when migrants arrive and the lake bed floods. Over 400 species have been recorded, and the swamps hold pelicans, herons and African fish eagles all year.

WILDLIFE AND ACTIVITIES

What You Will See and Do in Amboseli

Amboseli is the best place in Africa to watch elephants at close range. The families here are individually known and habituated to vehicles after fifty years of continuous research, which means they walk past you rather than away from you.

What to expect on an Amboseli safari. A morning drive out to the swamps for elephants and the mountain, a mid-day break, then an afternoon drive across the plains. The park is small enough that you are never far from your lodge.

Wildlife.

  • Elephant in large family herds, including some of the biggest tuskers left in Africa
  • Lion, cheetah and spotted hyena on the open plains
  • Buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest concentrated around the swamps
  • Hippo in Enkongo Narok, unusual this close to a desert landscape
  • Over 400 bird species including pelicans, flamingos in wet years, and raptors
  • No rhino. Amboseli lost its black rhino population to poaching in the 1990s and they have not been reintroduced

Game drives. Included on every itinerary. The swamps in the morning, Observation Hill for the panorama, and the western plains in the late afternoon when the light on the mountain is best.

Observation Hill. The one place in the park where you are allowed out of the vehicle. A short climb gives a 360 degree view over the swamps and, on a clear day, straight up at Kilimanjaro.

Maasai village visits. Amboseli is surrounded by Maasai group ranches and the cultural visits here are among the most genuine in Kenya, because the communities co-own the conservancies your fees support.

Night drives and walking safaris. Not permitted inside the national park. Available in Kimana Sanctuary and the surrounding conservancies, which is worth a night if you want to see caracal, genet or striped hyena.

Photography. This is a photographer’s park. The classic shot, elephants crossing open ground with Kilimanjaro behind, needs a clear dawn and a long lens. Ask your guide to position the vehicle for the light rather than the animal.

WHERE TO STAY

Lodges and Camps in Amboseli

The choice here is simpler than in the Mara. Inside the park puts you on the swamps at dawn when the elephants and the mountain are both at their best. Outside is cheaper and adds around 45 minutes each way.

Inside the Park

Lodges on the park floor with direct swamp access and unobstructed Kilimanjaro views. Best for photography and short stays where every morning counts.

Kimana Sanctuary

A community conservancy east of the park on the elephant corridor to Tsavo. Night drives and walking permitted, far fewer vehicles.

Selenkay Conservancy

North of the park on Maasai group ranch land. Excellent for guests who want walking safaris and cultural time alongside the game viewing.

Around Kimana Gate

The budget cluster. Simple tented camps and lodges at a fraction of the in-park rate, with a 45 minute drive to the swamps.

Ol Donyo and the Chyulu Hills

An hour away with views back to Kilimanjaro across open plains. High end, quiet, and good for riding and mountain biking.

Namanga Side

Small lodges near Meshanani gate, useful if you are crossing to or from Tanzania and want to break the drive.

KEY QUESTIONS

Amboseli Safari, Key Questions

Two nights is enough. The park is only 392 square kilometres and you can cover the main game areas in three or four drives. A third night makes sense if you want to add Kimana Sanctuary for a night drive, or if you are relying on one clear morning for Kilimanjaro.

Often, but not on demand. The summit is usually clear at dawn and again briefly before sunset, and hides behind cloud through the middle of the day. Your best odds are January, February and the June to October dry season. In the long rains you may not see it at all.

They do different things. Amboseli is the place for elephants at close range and for the mountain backdrop. The Mara has far higher predator density and the migration. Most of our guests do both, and Amboseli is usually the shorter of the two stops.

No. Amboseli lost its black rhino to poaching in the 1990s and they have not been reintroduced. If you want the full Big Five, pair Amboseli with Lake Nakuru, Ol Pejeta or the Masai Mara.

Budget from USD 140 to USD 200 per person per day, mid range USD 230 to USD 350, and luxury conservancy camps from USD 400 upward. Park fees of USD 90 per person per day are included in those figures. Our three day trip from Nairobi starts at USD 520 per person.

Amboseli is dusty in the dry season, so bring a scarf or buff, and a dust-proof bag for camera gear. Otherwise neutral colours, layers for cold morning drives, sun protection and binoculars. A long lens of 200mm or more if you want the classic elephant and mountain shot.
