Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is one of Rwanda’s most famous protected areas, located in the northwest part of the country along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The park is part of the larger Virunga Massif conservation area, which also extends into the neighboring countries.

Established in 1925, Volcanoes National Park is renowned for its population of mountain gorillas, one of the rarest and most endangered species on Earth. It’s home to approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, making it a crucial conservation area for these iconic primates.

In addition to mountain gorillas, the park is also inhabited by other primates such as golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and various bird species.

Tourism activities in Volcanoes National Park primarily focus on gorilla trekking, where visitors can embark on guided hikes to observe and interact with habituated gorilla groups in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking permits are required and are typically limited to ensure the well-being of the gorillas and minimize human impact on their environment.

Aside from gorilla trekking, the park offers other activities such as golden monkey tracking, birdwatching, and hiking to the crater lakes and scenic viewpoints.

Volcanoes National Park holds significant cultural and historical importance as well, as it was the research site for primatologist Dian Fossey, whose work studying mountain gorillas in the park brought international attention to their conservation needs.

Conservation efforts in Volcanoes National Park focus on protecting the mountain gorillas and their habitat from threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. These efforts include anti-poaching patrols, community-based conservation programs, and sustainable tourism initiatives aimed at supporting local communities while preserving the park’s natural resources.
