Nyungwe Forest National Park is another prominent protected area in Rwanda, located in the southwestern part of the country. It is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa and is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and pristine natural beauty.

Covering an area of approximately 1,020 square kilometers (395 square miles), Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including over 1,000 plant species, hundreds of bird species, and more than 75 mammal species. Notable species found within the park include chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, and various rare bird species such as the Albertine Rift endemic species.

The park offers visitors a range of activities to explore its diverse ecosystems, including guided nature walks, chimpanzee tracking, canopy walks, birdwatching, and hiking trails. The Canopy Walkway, suspended above the forest canopy, provides visitors with a unique perspective of the forest and its inhabitants.

In addition to its ecological importance, Nyungwe Forest National Park also plays a crucial role in watershed protection, as it is the source of numerous rivers and streams that provide water to surrounding communities and wildlife.

Conservation efforts in Nyungwe Forest National Park include habitat protection, research and monitoring programs, community-based tourism initiatives, and collaborations with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods while conserving the park’s natural resources.
